An asset retirement obligation (ARO) refers to the obligation of retiring a long-lived (and tangible) asset. If a reasonable estimate of the asset's fair value exists upon retirement, then it should be recognized accordingly. Then the asset should be capitalized by increasing the carrying amount of the related asset, and should never be capitalized by taking its undiscounted cash flows.
