Unfortunately, flexibility assessments do not get the recognition as other tests, but it is absolutely critical to maintain good flexibility for optimal health. Flexibility is the ability of your joints to move through a full range of motion (“ROM”). The potential of that movement is determined by the musculoskeletal system. Flexibility and ROM are sometimes used interchangeably. ROM is the functional capacity and movement potential of a joint. Some characteristics to know is that the hip has limited ROM due to bone constraints to support upper body weight, shoulders have a large ROM as it only supports the arm weight, and joints have even greater ROM, but are less stable.
