If the investor buys a bond at a discount, then it will be carried at the discount price at the start, below the face amount of the bond. If the investor buys a bond between interest payment dates, investor will pay for the accrued interest that the investor will soon receive back. Therefore, the carrying amount will be less than the cash paid to the seller and the face amount of the bond.
