A Dividend is is part of a company's earnings to be paid back to their shareholders. This can be done monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. It can also not be done at all.
For instance, a company has 100M shares outstanding. They decide for the quarter to issue a $0.10 dividend per share. All of it in cash. Therefore, they will pay out $10M in dividends to shareholders.
