When determining non-controlling interest, you need to remember the idea of common stock. If you are acquiring 90% of a company, where the parent's common stock is 100 and the subsidiary common stock is 50, then you eliminate the subsidiary's common stock of 50, and common stock equals the parent's common stock (of 100 in this case).
