In the root of everything, we are instinctual and bias. That is not meant to say that we are bad or that we are not open minded. On the contrary, society and individuals have evolved because we have been able to condition our instincts and accept many different perspectives.
But the consistent ability to have virtue and be morally responsible is well, inconsistent. We fail to rationally accept universal truths. Yes, it is still important to ensure individuality and creativity, but when we deleverage our resources through bias, we compromise progress and growth. The majority of us will accept other point of views, befriend people with different personalities, and even share intimate moments. But when we are faced with uncomfortable situations, we tend to avoid them. We then fail to promote a proper social capital, which effectively reduces the general networking of our trust and loyalty. For instance, we have unique cliques, where certain “rules” only apply to “them”. In the end, this can put at risk the integrity of individual merit.
