A very effective tool of losing weight is calculating the energy balance though food recalls and logs. Food recalls requires the person to try and list all the foods and drinks consumed within the last 24 hours, where a food log is similar to the recall but differs in the data collection process (food log is recorded right after consumption).
The nutrients that should be covered during the log are carbohydrates, sugars, fats, proteins, and saturated fats; you may also count cholesterol, fiber, sodium, calcium, and iron. Errors to avoid when conducting food recalls/logs are the following: (i) Miscalculating serving size; (ii) Forgetting food items that were consumed; (iii) Temporary changes to eating habits; (iv) Not realizing that calories are in drinks as well; (v) Lack of knowledge to foods when socially eating out.
